Joan Ely Carlson, violin and soprano
Joan Ely Carlson keeps herself busy both as a violinist and as a soprano. A tenured violinist in the Austin Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Victoria Bach Festival Orchestra, she also performs regularly on baroque violin with La Follia Austin Baroque and Austin Baroque Orchestra (formerly Ensemble Settecento). Upcoming engagements on baroque violin include concerts with the Texas Early Music Project and with the St. Cecilia Series’ Baroque Festival at First Presbyterian Church in Austin. Soprano-wise, Joan is a member of San Antonio Chamber Choir, with whom she recorded a CD of choral works by Andrew Rindfleicsh to be released later this year. Additionally, she is a member of Austin Baroque Orchestra’s Coro Settecento and sings in the Compline Choir of St. David’s Episcopal Church in Austin, often serving as cantor for the short, meditative service of ancient evening prayer. In the civilian world, Joan is married to David and is a recovering lawyer and a Crossfitter who can deadlift her body weight and then some. This keeps her in shape for her main thing: joyfully doing the bidding of her two daughters, Emma and Clara.
